Emphasis

October 21, 2016 | Melissa Weissenberger

Next week, our school enters “Spiritual Emphasis Week” where each morning, grades 7-12 gather in the Chapel for the first period and we focus on a spiritual topic.

Chris and I had the privilege of planning it this year and we are stoked about it! It’s a lot of details and coordination, but we’ve created an interactive week diving into the topic of the persecuted church.

We stayed late at school tonight to finish the design and prototype of the booklet for Spiritual Emphasis Week:

They will be travelling to 3 different stations each day. At least one of those stations will be a “country” where they watch a video and paste in a “visa” to their passport. The visa will have details and statistics about the church in that region of the world.

They may travel to another country station next, or they may pass on to an art station and then a prayer station. These activities are hopefully going to give our students a means of responding emotionally and spiritually to the information they’re receiving.

Action

Chris has been focusing the youth ministry this year on the concept of “action”. Observing our students last year, and listening to their heartaches and struggles, we both felt that they don’t simply need more knowledge. Many of them have been studying the Bible as a school course since the 1st grade. When we talk to them about their weekly Chapel time, the common biggest complaint has been that they are tired of being talked to.

So, in that spirit, this is a week of discovery.

We hope that as they approach a potentially new concept, in a creative and interactive manner, that they will be able to truly engage with it.

Pray

Please pray for us. We are facilitating this journey all of next week and then leading them into a retreat the 28th-30th. These next 9 days could be extremely influential in their lives if they allow it.

Chris and I are feeling a bit stretched thin as planning this week and the retreat is one of many responsibilities and projects we’re tackling at the moment. We need to rest well and walk confidently in the inspiration and direction God has given us.

Also–the school has not held a High School retreat since 2013 for a variety of reasons and I’m praying that they don’t feel discouraged about it. Flyers were handed out today and I heard a few students murmur about how they hope it even happens because the retreat was cancelled both last year and the year before.

I’m excited to be able to update you all throughout the week and eventually reflect on the retreat. I know that God is going to be at work this next week and I’m so glad you are our partners, enabling us to serve these incredible kids.

    Chris and Melissa,
We are very encouraged by you and your walk with Jesus. Send me specific prayer requests—names of students even whose hearts may be closed off to hearing the Good News of Jesus. We will pray—we love ya’ll and are excited for what you all are doing.
    By His Grace and Power,
    KT

I am so proud of you two! Know that you are prayed for in our Sunday School class weekly, and at the Parent of Missionaries meeting each month. While I’m not on a current mission (besides yours!) I will be singing in the Ligonier Choir concert following the Ligonier Regional Conference on October 30! I pray that our music will lead people to Christ!
    Love,
    Mom
